The Death of the ICE Age - The time is ticking...
And the true polestar setting the direction is the company POLESTAR.
The world of automaker drivetrains are changing. But what happens with the current internal combustion engines (ICEs)? Do we have a horse-and-carriage vs motor-driven car situation or will there be a co-existence? What is your view on this?
Here are the end dates (RIP) by automakers for their ICE models:
Jaguar - 20251
Volvo - 20302
Ford - 20303
General Motors - 20354
Honda - 20405
Other developments:
Stellantis Group - no additional ICE investments6
VW Group - no new ICE developments, only updates to existing7
Hyundai - stops further diesel engine developments8
Mazda - developing e-fuels for ICE9
Porsche (part of VW Group) - developing e-fuels10 and also have their BEVs in production and further models under development
No ICE expiration dates set and no clear statements:
BMW11, Mercedes-Benz12, Nissan, Toyota, Renault13
A decision on ICE or BEV and some staying with both, is to just look at the product itself. I want to emphasize what POLESTAR announced with their 0 project14 - to make their whole production carbon neutral and produce a fully carbon-neutral car by 2030.
E-Conversions
So what about your existing car? Well, if you have a 911, there are various companies offering the electrical conversion15, if that is the way to go. Or you can get a classic Bentley or Rolls converted by Lunaz16.
Or what about a classic Ferrari going electric (Fully Charged):
